An FFT analyzer uses a Fast Fourier Transform to break sound into its frequency components. Instead of hearing sound as one combined event, an FFT display shows where energy is concentrated across the spectrum. This makes it useful for identifying dominant frequency, resonance peaks, modal behavior, and changes in acoustic response.
In instrument work, FFT analysis can be especially useful because many important behaviors are frequency-based. A guitar top, back, brace, bridge, or assembled body may respond strongly at certain frequencies and weakly at others. Seeing those peaks can help a maker or technician move beyond guesswork and begin comparing acoustic behavior more clearly.
